What Is MTD for Income Tax?

From April 2026, if you have an annual combined income over £50,000 from self-employment or property, you'll need to:

  • Keep digital records of your income and expenses
  • Submit quarterly year-to-date summaries to HMRC using MTD IT-recognised software
  • File a final declaration at the year-end

This replaces the old Self Assessment process. You won't be able to use the HMRC Gateway — you'll need MTD IT-recognised software like TaxNav.

How TaxNav works

Add your income and expenses

Enter transactions directly in TaxNav via your favourite device, or connect your existing spreadsheet using our import worksheet. TaxNav supports Excel.

Review your quarterly summary

TaxNav summarises your income and expenses for each quarter, no detailed transactions are sent to HMRC. Review the figures, and see your estimated tax bill in real time.

Submit to HMRC

When you're ready, submit your quarterly update directly to HMRC through TaxNav. If you need to make any income/expense refinements, you can do these in the next quarter’s submission. At year-end, add any final adjustments (dividends, bank interest, etc. ) and file your final declaration.

What goes into each submission?

Quarterly updates (x4 per year)

Year-end final declaration – we guide you through this

Year-to-date income for the period
Confirm figures are correct
Year-to-date expenses for the period
Add other income (dividends, savings interest, etc.)
Year-to-date running totals
Claim reliefs (gift aid, pension contributions etc.)
Unadjusted — doesn't need to be 100% accurate
Final adjustments and corrections

Is TaxNav right for you?

Self-employed

Freelancers, consultants, tradespeople, contractors, side businesses — if you file Self Assessment for self-employment income, TaxNav handles your MTD IT submissions.

Landlords

UK property, foreign property, or both. One TaxNav licence covers all your rental income. No separate accounts needed.

Self-employed AND landlord

Got income from both? No problem. TaxNav supports any combination under one account — self-employment, UK property, and foreign property.

CIS construction workers

TaxNav retrieves your CIS deductions directly from HMRC. Always know what's been deducted to ensure it’s claimed back.

Also have PAYE income?

If you have employment income alongside self-employment or property, you'll see that at year-end in your final declaration. TaxNav guides you through it.

Income under £50,000?

MTD IT won't be mandatory for you until April 2027 (£30k+) or April 2028 (£20k+). But you can start using or practising now to be ready.
